Tribute to a BFF (for life!!!)

I don't know why I decided to paint this. But let me tell you, it was a EUREKA! moment... Perhaps I was fascinated with the intricate designs they have on the sheets now. Or perhaps I've been surrounded by a lot of *beep* lately. Just kidding!

Medium: Coffee on 9x12 cold press acid free paper.

"Pishbol"

For Pilipinas kong mahal, here's my "PISHBOL"... Hang in there, bayan ko! My love and prayers are with you. I miss Philippines!

By the way, Pishbol is a filipino version of "Fishballs" which is made of processed fish rolled into balls, sold from carts pushed by vendors. Good when dipped in a special sweet brown sauce (with a spicy option). And no, they are not testicles, if you have the question in your mind...

(coffee on 9x12 cold press 90 lb/ 190gsm watercolor paper)

Vevina's New Fairy Shoes

My husband asked me WHY THAT!? I don't know. I just thought, maybe it's her fairyday and she's getting a new pair. Maybe she did something good. Maybe she's worn out/outgrown the last one. Maybe she's going to a fairy ball. Maybe the last pair hurt. (Red wine on cold press, acid free, 140lb watercolor paper. I still think wine stains better on 90lb/190 gsm though)

MERLOT'S MAGIC

Today, I was inspired to make a court jester from...you guessed it...Merlot! I never thought painting with red wine could give me so much joy (it actually behaves better than coffee, on 90 lb/190 gsm Papier Aquarelle, that is). Here's my TGIF gift to you! And to God who is the source of all these! Everything for His greater glory.

Love,
Clarisse

How do I stay inspired?

I got this question from Kaye today.

Imagine an artist who's had 20 years worth of her artworks since she was a child, burned by an immature ex-boyfriend -- and those pieces weren't even "given" but borrowed to be scanned and posted online back in the day when personal websites weren't as popular, until the relationship has gone awry to a point of no return (pun intended, with reference to the sketchbooks LOL).

She didn't make anything for six long years... (except for a few pieces per year, when madness struck). It was just too painful. It was painful but deep inside, the passion kept burning until she couldn't contain it all inside -- the desire to create, to experiment with different media, the images dancing inside her head, the craving for attention meant to inspire others, and herself even more.

Liken it to a balloon bursting from too much air, a heart aching from too much love, and a full bladder (go figure), an orgasmic explosion of sorts from too much passion bottled up inside.

She's barely scratching the surface at this point. But so darn glad she's back.

Coffee Art

I'm a big fan of Sunshine Plata. Although I've experimented with coffee as medium eons ago, I never really had any finished coffee art until inspiration really struck me hard -- through Sunshine Plata. And so here are three of my first works, a tribute to her:

I'M SO HAPPY! (Yes that's the title of this work)... I finally had time to keep painting with coffee! Yes, that's coffee on heavy-weight cold press watercolor paper (140 lb). I'm bouncing off the walls! More coffee art to come.

TIKI DREAM. I've always been intrigued by Hawaiian Tiki Masks. This is my first Tiki. So please bear with me. And yes, more Tiki to come too.

I'm not sure how to call this. I just kept painting with coffee coz I was having a blast. And hubby wasn't home yet so first came the moon (patterned after the size of a red disposable cup) and then the sky, and then I was supposed to draw a lone tree, but the fairy came out instead. SERENDIPITY. Yes!

Lampara ni Lola Meding (Grandmother's Lamp)

My "Lola Meding" would have this burning all night on top of my grandfather's vintage travel trunk. I can still smell the flame burning, hear her AM radio program in my head, see the dancing shadows of the curtain along the length of the huge capiz windows (and must I add the faint sensation of the mosquito net against my arm). I miss those summer nights when my cousin and I would sleep on the spare bed in Lola's bedroom and whisper to each other for hours while Lola did her evening rituals --vanity rituals, basically!
Rendered with a Graphite Pencil on 9.5x6 in. Acid-Free & Lignin-Free medium weight drawing paper. I don't have to deal with ballpoint pens and scratch papers anymore!!! My friend Mo wanted it so bad I gave it to her. It's alright, she's pretty much gotten my breakfasts covered all the time! (Sausage and egg muffins at work) I'll just make another one soon.

HE NEEDS A NAME

I did this during my afternoon coffee break today. I should really start keeping a decent sketchpad at work so I don't end up drawing on scratch papers (this one's a xerox paper) when inspiration strikes. I see my dad loving this one.

TGIF!

I did this during my afternoon coffee break. Done with a black Papermate ballpoint pen on the back of a scratch paper. *LOL* That's my purse but the shoes are fictitious. (I wore flipflops to work today -- a pair of tall ones with glittery white straps). TGIF!!!

EMILY

Done in green ink -- Zebra Ballpoint office pen on white copy paper (ack!). Work's slow because it's Friday, and I'm bored and sleepy. This one's inspired by Imagination Studios online and my co-worker Stephanie's birthday -- she likes fairies. I'm also inspired by my little friend and neighbor, Emily, who waits for me on her bicycle with her big sister Irene in my driveway when I get home from work. I still have to draw Irene. She's looks like a little Japanese doll.

The Tattoo on His Chest

I did this one lazy sunday afternoon in 2007. I told hubby to stay still for me and he did while watching TV.

A moment worth doing all over again.

Robinhood

This was done way back in 2003. I remember having very strong angry feelings that day. I don't want to talk abou it anymore but it had something to do with people meddling with my decisions and pulling my husband down. Who wouldn't be angry? I couldn't scan this because the sketchpad is bigger than my scanner!

A Valentine Present

February 2007, I had no job and it was Valentine's Day. So I decided to make this for hubby as a simple Valentine present. I put it in a frame from the dollar store. Human figures interest me. I drew this maybe because I was sad but she was nude basically because I appreciate things and people with pure intentions, no outer coverings, no pretensions.

Milo, the Singing Pooch

A photo I took of our pet Milo. This won 2nd Place in "Furry Tales", a nationwide amateur photography contest that featured pets.

If you want to find out more about Milo, please click on his photo.

"Deidre"

Another one in my unicorn collection.
This is the very first time I dabbled in coffee painting. I used it like water color. It happened one day when I was bored at work and thought I'd do something with leftover coffee from my mug. I didn't know there's some coffee artists already out there.
I plan to do more of these. I guess it's never too late.

Duane Chapman: A Study in (IKEA) Pencil

Drawn during one of those coffee breaks at work. I love coming home from IKEA with a couple of shopping pencils because they are so handy and I can keep them in my purse or jacket pocket to use anytime I feel like I want to sketch something. They're small, around three inches (compare to the pink eraser). Thus, this Dog the Bounty hunter is only around 5 inches. Maybe less.

"Bastien"

I like naming my unicorn sketches. His name is Bastien because that's the first thing that came to my mind after I signed it. It now sits in an easy-open gallery frame in one corner of our house which hubby wants to convert into my gallery, with spotlights and all.

Lightning over the Golden Gate

Lightning over the Golden Gate Bridge.
BMW Pumkin Carving Competition, Halloween 2008. 2nd place.
I won First Place in 2007. Don't be awed. It was an amateur competition and I competed against smiley pumpkins (you know, triangle eyes and a boat for a mouth) and jack-o-lanterns! But this one lost. I was in a hurry and there was no planning. Everything happened overnight -- it was a random concept. It was also my first time to use the hubby's drummel tool too. I guess I'll switch back to manual labor for 2009. I trust my fingers more than any mechanical tool, I guess.
